Dorchester is the longest-serving state-focused political conference in the United States. Founded by Senator Bob Packwood, we approach our 60th Conference this year as a place where those seeking to enact political change grounded in common sense, fiscal responsibility, and American Republican values come together to network and enjoy each other’s company.
The Champoeg Reception for Local Elected and Appointed Officials is a welcoming event where those who govern closest to the people of Oregon can come together as Republicans and network with others committed to good government in our state.
The Champoeg Reception is named for the first territorial government in the Oregon Territory, where the people of the area came together to govern themselves. It honors the work of local leaders who solve problems, overcome differences, and build a united, pragmatic future.
What Is the Champoeg Reception About?
In the spring of 1841, a group of Oregon settlers met in Champoeg with the hope of outlining a plan for local government in the Oregon region. They believed in self-rule as the path to better outcomes and a brighter future. That first meeting sparked the political action that ultimately led to Oregon becoming a state. That initial gathering of activist citizens—who aspired to local control and embraced the American ideal of government by the people, for the people—continues to inspire many of us to work hard for a better Oregon.
In honor of this historic meeting and the enduring importance of local leadership, we invite you to join us to network and connect with your fellow hardworking caretakers of local government.
Please register today to attend the Champoeg Reception and be part of this meaningful tradition. Or better yet, register to attend the entire Dorchester Conference and be part of a full weekend of engaging discussions, meaningful connections, and shared commitment to a better Oregon.
